The city of Calpe is asking the Subdelegación de Gobierno to strengthen measures taken in the municipality against illegal street sales. This decision has been taken because it is impossible to hire interim policemen in the summer, as provided for by the law on the coordination of local police in the Valencia region.

This was agreed this morning at a meeting with Mayor Ana Sala, representatives of the local police, the Guardia Civil and associations of dealers AEMCO and hoteliers Sabor a Calpe.

The new law coordinating the local police of the Valencian Community implies that the local police must have the same number of members in summer as in winter, although the population has tripled, a time when there is also a greater frequency of cases of illegal street vending.

This summer, the local police of Calpe carried out 216 actions related to street vending, of which 80 percent consisted of surveillance tasks to prevent possible problem cases. To carry out this activity, 27 charges were brought, of which two were arrested for violations of the Ley Orgánica 4/2015 for the protection of public safety to illegal street vendors and one illegal street vender for crimes of bodily harm to an agent of the authority, injury and resistance. Also 70 seizures were carried out.

Calpe reminds its inhabitants that outpatient street selling is only allowed at Saturday markets, as well as at artisan markets in Calle Alemania and Plaza del Mediterráneo. It is planned to punish not only the illegal street vendors, but also the buyers. The fine is 150 €.
