Calpe Town Council has applied to join the network "Building Europe with Local Authorities" (BELC), a pilot programme of the European Commission that aims to create a European network of political representatives at local level to improve the communication of the European Union with local administrations and its citizens.

The Calpe Town Council unanimously approved in the plenary session of 13 March a motion presented by the socialist municipal group so that Calp Town Council could join this project. And now the councillor for Residents, EDUSI project and Next Generation funds, Marco Bittner, has been appointed as representative of the municipality in this initiative, who will be responsible for requesting the accession of the City Council to the network.

"The aim is to bring Europe closer to the citizens through their local council. In this way, local administrations become "ambassadors" of the EU to the citizens so that they can find out more easily about the policies and workings of the EU, which is often perceived as a distant institution", said Marco Bittner.

Bittner's duties will include presenting EU projects to the public, promoting debates on the initiatives and political measures carried out by the EU, encouraging citizen participation in these issues and attending seminars and visits offered by the European Commission, among other tasks.

It should be remembered that Calpe is a beneficiary of ERDF funds through the Sustainable and Integrated Development Strategy (EDUSI) and recently of the Next Generation funds, through which the Calpe 2026 Tourism Sustainability Plan will be carried out with an investment of 2,001,722 €.

Calpe is currently the only municipality in the Marina Alta that is part of the European network as Jávea's membership in this initiative expired at the end of the legislature
