The video surveillance cameras installed to improve safety and monitor traffic have solved three accidents in their first month of operation. The cameras have helped solve a hit-and-run collision between a van and a lorry, an accident involving an injured scooter driver and conflicting accounts between the parties, and a hit-and-run accident involving three vehicles.
A month ago, the City Council installed a network of 16 video surveillance cameras on the five main roads in the municipality. This is the first phase of an ambitious traffic monitoring and control plan. All the information from the images is sent to the traffic control centre installed in the Local Police headquarters. The Local Police are responsible for monitoring and viewing the cameras from their headquarters, and an officer has been assigned to this task and has received the appropriate training.
The intention of the Departments of Public Safety and IT is to continue this process by implementing a second phase in which the network of cameras will be extended to other areas of the municipality. The aim is to reinforce security in Calpe, monitor traffic and obtain data management tools to analyse traffic and pedestrian flow levels. A budget of €100,000 has already been allocated to carry out the second phase of this project.
