Calp celebró anoche un concierto homenaje a las víctimas de la DANA en la Plaza de la Villa en el que se guardaron 229 segundos de silencio, uno por cada persona fallecida en la catástrofe del 29 de octubre de 2024.

Last evening, Calpe held a concert in tribute to the victims of the DANA flood in the Plaza de la Villa, where 229 seconds of silence were observed, one for each person who died in the disaster on 29 October 2024.

The tribute was attended by representatives of the local police, civil protection and two volunteers who were responsible for organising the deployment of volunteers from Calpe last year to assist in the relief efforts in the affected municipalities. They represented all the associations, companies and individuals who, in one way or another, offered their collaboration and solidarity to help those affected. They were also responsible for reading the poem ‘Ruido’ (Noise), a poetic collaboration by several writers as a tribute to the victims of the DANA.

The mayor of Calpe, Ana Sala, accompanied by the entire municipal corporation, highlighted during her speech the importance of keeping the memory of the victims alive and acting responsibly in emergencies of this magnitude: ‘material things can be rebuilt, but lost human lives cannot be brought back,’ she said.

The event was organised by Calpe Town Council and ended with a concert by pianist Alba Sansano in memory of the victims and in recognition of all the people and organisations who offered their help and solidarity during those difficult days.

Noise in Valencia.

In the dark, they pile up, insurmountable,

memories, history, the people,

flashes of lives in abundance,

the years collapsed in an instant.

Decadence that continues to kill.

Amidst the destruction, people pray and implore.

Faced with the mud that continues to advance,

the slow barges delay.

And all that remains is a glance at the sky

that cries out to deaf ears.

Agonising faces beg for truths,

a strong tide buries their memories.

Memories of a life now distant,

open spaces for new stories.

Between prayers and in the midst of mourning,

the people save the people.

A bridge of arms and hands that

resists rivers, that unites borders.

Bodies united in grief,

without flags, without borders.

The earth weeps over the devastated voice,

men measure themselves against misfortune.

Island of mud, black cloud ignites

the tired gaze, the defeated light.

From a moon in Valencia

looking at its violent silhouette.

The sky a witness, the ground an executioner.

Life and death in a single mourning.

We, the lullaby that will silence this sorrow.

The legacy of this wounded body.
