Calpe yesterday celebrated  October, 9, the day of the Comunidad Valenciana, with the institutional awarding of the "Jaume Pastor i Fluixà" prize and the city's medals of honour, which each year honour the work of people or institutions that have made a significant contribution to the improvement of the city. The act began with a video in honour of the historian, professor and journalist Pastor i Fluixà, who dedicated his short life to the memory of Calpe and Les Marines.

 

After a performance by the Ensemble Ifac and the soprano singer Pepi Lloret, the city councils took to the stage. Ana Salas, the Mayor, read the institutional statement which stated: "This 9th of October invites us to consolidate the mechanisms of civil coexistence, integration and cohesion of Valencian society; encourages us to seek a fairer society, more prosperous and able to offer its citizens prospects for the future".

 

After reading the declaration, the award ceremony began. The "corbata de la villa" (city tie) went to MOFTAG, a group of British women in Calpe who collect donations for social projects. The "Premi Jove" went to the young engineer Manuel Cabrera Méndez for his project of plant cultivation in urban areas. The sports medal went to the Club Náutico de Calpe, founded in 1078 and today a reference in the Valencian sailing world.

 

The Medal for Entrepreneurs went to Grupo Antonio Perles for his commitment to sustainable development in the sector, and the Tourism Medal went to Juan Bautista Boronat Santana, self-taught craftsman and initiator of the first marine snail business in the fishing port. The Culture Medal went to Matias Pastor Carrals for his commitment to the City Chapel, in which he has performed since 63 years, and the Citizens Medal went to Cáritas Parroquial Calpe for his solidarity work.

 

The "Jaume Pastor i Fluixà" prize went to Jacinto Moragues Mauri, born in Calpe. He is a chemistry doctor and inventor and co-inventor of 107 patents in Spain, 4 in the USA, 18 in Great Britain and another 7 in other European countries. His most famous invention is undoubtedly "Almax".
