Two months ago, Calpe City Council launched a new channel of communication with the citizens by telegram. The response was better than expected, and the city now has 840 subscribers, a good number considering that this instant messaging service is less used than others, such as WhatsApp.
Although the Calpe channel has only been in operation for a short time, it is the third city in Spain with the highest number of subscribers, after Vall d'Uixò with 1,700 subscribers and Sueca with just over 1,500.
Of the 71 cities that currently have a telegraph channel, Calpe has even more subscribers than other major cities such as Girona, Seville or Badalona.
Although there are still only a few municipalities that have a telegram channel, the fact that WhatsAppp has not allowed distribution lists since December 7th has increased the number of cities that have chosen to look for an alternative in the telegram.
These channels are one of the best tools for sending information of interest to citizens quickly and easily, which is particularly useful for sending important warnings to the population in emergency situations, such as the latest episodes of the "Gloria" storm.
"In Calpe we are working to improve communication with the public, and to this end, in addition to the social networks or the news bulletin, we have a telegram," said the Mayor of Calpe, Ana Sala.
"Knowing that we are the third largest municipality in Spain in terms of the number of followers, we continue to invest in this channel, which is a great help when we want to communicate, for example, that classes are suspended due to rain, when there is a roadblock or when the pharmacies are on duty," Sala said.
