Calpe Town Hall has prepared a day of conviviality to celebrate Europe Day on 9 May.
The programme will start at 11 am with the hoisting of the European flag in the Plaza Colón. At 12 noon there will be a reading of the European manifesto recalling the fundamental values of unity, diversity and solidarity as the foundation of the European Union. And at 13 h will be held in the Calalga the tasting of a giant paella.
The Calpe Town Hall invites all Calpe citizens to participate in this event in order to strengthen the ties between the different communities residing in the municipality. The day also aims to raise awareness about the importance of the EU and the European Parliament elections to be held on June 9. In this sense, Calpe Town Council has participated in European projects for which it has received EU funds such as the EDUSI Strategy "Revitaliza Calpe" or the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination which will involve an investment of 2.001.722 € financed entirely by the European Union-Next GenerationEU.
This is an initiative organised by the BELC Department after Calpejoined the network "Building Europe with Local Authorities" (BELC), a pilot programme of the European Commission with the aim of creating a European network of political representatives at local level to improve communication between the European Union and local administrations and their citizens.
"We intend with this day to create a meeting point between the different European cultures that coexist in Calpe, to promote their integration in the municipality and thus create a space for exchange and cultural enrichment," said Marco Bittner, BELC Councillor, who added that this day is born with a spirit of continuity.
It is also planned that different public buildings such as the Town Hall and the Casa Nova, as well as different roundabouts, will be lit up in blue, the colour of the European Union.
Europe Day has been celebrated every 9 May since 1985 in memory of the so-called Schuman Declaration, which was the first step towards the integration of European states.
