Calpe Town Council, Fishermen's Guild and Aguas de Calpe sign agreement for a plastic-free sea

Calpe Town Council, the Fishermen's Guild and Aguas de Calpe have signed a collaboration agreement to recognise and reinforce the marine waste removal work that professionals in the fishing sector have been carrying out for years as part of their daily activities. The agreement allows the service to be structured, its management to be improved and financial support to be provided to ensure its continuity.

The accumulation of plastics in the sea is a threat to the marine ecosystem, affecting biodiversity and fishing activity. Thanks to this agreement, the removal of this waste is optimised before it breaks down into microplastics, contributing to the conservation of species and the marine environment.

The fishermen of the Calpe Fishermen's Association will continue to play a key role, locating, collecting and removing waste during their working days, as they have been doing on a regular basis. In addition, they will be responsible for delivering the waste to authorised waste managers and raising awareness among other fishermen and the public about the importance of protecting the sea.

Aguas de Calpe will contribute €8,000 to the Fishermen's Guild during the 2026 financial year for seabed cleaning and waste collection activities. The agreement therefore represents institutional recognition and improvement of work that has been contributing for years to keeping the Calpe coastline cleaner and healthier.

The signing of the agreement was attended by the Mayor, Ana Sala, the Head of the Fishermen's Guild, Paco Catalá, the Councillor for Fisheries, Mariola Mulet, and the Councillor for the Integral Water Cycle, Ximo Perles.
