The company awarded the contract for the pruning service for Calpe's palm trees has begun work this week. In total, 1,377 specimens of different species of palm trees will be pruned, work which has recently been awarded for 154,546.11 euros.

The pruning has begun on the Arenal-Bol promenade and beach and will be extended to other areas of the municipality. It is a periodic pruning that affects both the leaves and the fruit clusters of the plants, in order to keep them in good condition. Normally, periodic pruning is carried out before the fruit ripens in order to prevent it from falling onto the public highway.

In addition, under this contract, extraordinary pruning may also be carried out throughout the year depending on the condition and characteristics of the palm tree and emergency work when there is a lack of safety due to major causes - accidents, vandalism or adverse weather conditions - or for other reasons determined by the City Council.

Likewise, the work included includes the phytosanitary maintenance of the species, i.e. preventive, palliative and curative treatments aimed at maintaining the plants in an appropriate state of health for their survival. They will include all diseases and pests that the palm trees may suffer from and special attention will be paid to treatments for the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus).

On the other hand, in those exceptional cases in which the palm tree cannot survive, the company will be in charge of felling and removing it; in the same way as when there is a lack of security.

The contract is foreseen for one year with the possibility of extension for a further two years.
