The Calp Town Council is continuing the installation of letter boxes in the municipality's "urbanizaciones" (housing estates) to ensure the delivery of postal items, after the Post Office announced a few years ago that it was interrupting the door-to-door delivery service in the housing estates which do not have concentrated letter boxes or which are not properly organised in accordance with the provisions of the Law on the liberalisation of the universal postal service and postal services.
This year, 432 letter boxes will be installed in the neighbourhoods of Carrió Alto, Vallesa I, Empedrola I, Cometa III, La Merced, Gran Sol, Los Pinos and Carrió. The owners of a house in these "urbanizaciones" can apply to the Citizens Advice Centre (OAC) for the rental of a letterbox.
Although the installation of letterboxes is basically a matter for the citizens, the Town Hall considered it appropriate to carry out this initiative, as it is aware of the difficulties this creates for the inhabitants of the "urbanizaciones", many of whom are foreigners and absent at certain times of the year, in addition to the large number of letterboxes that need to be installed.
The city began to install the first letterboxes in 2014; at that time 884 letterboxes were installed in the districts of Benicolada, Canuta, Canuta Alta, Canuta Baja, Estación, La Soliva and Oltamar. In 2016 a total of 516 letterboxes were installed in Benicuco, Borumbot, Calalga, Canuta de Ifach, el Tosal and Manzanera. Last year 684 letterboxes were installed in the Bassetes, Buenavista, Caleta, Carrió, Colari, Cometa, Costeres, El Sol, Empedrola, Gran Sol, Merced, Ortembach, Pinarmar, Los Pinos and Vallesa areas.
Councillor Hilde Backaert has pointed out that "we have been installing letterboxes for almost seven years, and the fact that there are "urbanizaciones" where we have had to install a new battery of letterboxes shows that this is a successful initiative. I would like to thank the Calidad Urbana, OAC and Línea 900 departments for their work and commitment to this project".
