The Calpe City Council has joined the campaign "No alimentes al monstruo de las cloacas" ("Don't feed the canal monster"). The campaign is launched by AEAS, the Spanish Waterworks Association.

The aim of the campaign is to inform the public about the consequences of throwing damp wipes and other products into the toilet.

Among the negative consequences are the environmental problems caused by wastewater discharges, which sometimes occur on our beaches and rivers by wiping cloths.

In addition, the large amount of wipes thrown causes large bottlenecks in public sewer networks, pumping stations and sewage treatment plants, leading to significant economic repair costs.

The campaign would like to stress that only what is known among the (Spanish) 3 Ps should be thrown into the toilets: "Pipí, popó, papel" (urine, excrement, paper). Until now 115 institutions and 35 cities have joined the campaign.

The mayor of the city, Ana Sala, declared that "we wanted to join this campaign, with the aim that all the inhabitants of Calpe would become aware that we cannot throw down wet wipes to the toilet.

"In reality it is a matter of changing the toilet with the waste bin, and with this simple gesture we will help to save the planet and avoid blockages in the toilets of our houses and in the public network," Sala added.
