The city of Calpe is working on a Plan de Ciudad Amigable with the elderly. To this end, it has carried out an ambitious process of civic participation in which older people from the community have participated in 8 workshops.
At the end of the workshops, more than 250 proposals were collected in areas such as transport, housing, health, participation and social services. These actions will be examined by a technical team to explore the possibility and include them in the Action Plan.
"We wanted to give the older people of Calpe a voice and listen to their suggestions through this participative process, because no one is better than them, can help us give a more effective response to their problems and needs," said the Mayor of Calpe, Ana Sala.
The Age Friendly Cities initiative is promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO) with the aim of creating environments and services that promote and facilitate active and healthy ageing.
WHO believes that an age-appropriate city is a city where policies, services and structures related to the physical and social environment of the city are designed and reorganized to support and enable older people to live in dignity, stay healthy and continue to participate fully and actively in society. In short, cities that promote and facilitate active ageing.
In order to join the network of older friendly cities, the municipality of Calpe carried out a diagnosis of the state of the city. Once the city is part of the network, an action plan will be drawn up to implement measures to improve the well-being and quality of life of older people in Calpe.
It is expected that the Action Plan for an Ageing City will be completed in the coming months and will run until 2022.
