The plenary session of the Calpe Town Council held yesterday unanimously approved to dedicate the year 2024 to the celebration of the centenary of the Calpe Fishermen's Guild. It was also agreed to create a Commission that will be responsible for establishing the guidelines for the development of actions and activities and approve the general programme of events.

This commission will be made up of the mayoress, the councillors responsible for the Sea, Culture, Tourism Planning and Commerce-Creama, as well as two representatives of the opposition groups. Five members of the Cofradía de Pescadores (Fishermen's Guild) will also form part of the commission, among them the Mayor Patron, as well as four representatives of the population in general and of the seafaring community in particular.

At the same point it was established that during the year 2024 the Town Hall will use in its communications, publicity supports and other identifying elements a brand representative of the commemoration.

The Calpe Fishermen's Guild will be 100 years old in 2024. On 6 April 1924, the regulations of the Calpe Fishermen's Warehouse were presented to the Provincial Civil Government with a social and protective purpose for the seafaring class.

Article 1 of the first regulation stated that "The Calpe Fishermen's Warehouse is a corporate association of fishermen that seeks the complete redemption of this class, extending culture among its members, establishing in their favour the different social insurances and exploiting, without the help of intermediaries, the fishing industry". Since then, the Fishermen's Guild has been a key institution in the history and life of the municipality.

The mayoress pointed out in the plenary session that "this is a sector that has been very hard hit, and we have fought alongside the Cofradía to stop the fish farm, which is still underway. With this celebration we want to recognise the Cofradía and highlight its importance in the history of Calpe".

Calpe, city of Pet Welfare

Yesterday's plenary session also unanimously approved the adhesion of the municipality to the Valencian Network for the Welfare of Pets of the Valencian Community.

This membership involves taking on a series of commitments such as the approval of a local ordinance on the keeping of pets in the human environment, approving a specific budget item for the Department of Animal Welfare, enabling adequate spaces for the recreation of dogs, inspecting and processing complaints of animal abuse, approving a feline colonial Plan in the municipality, approving a protocol for action in the event of an abandoned, injured, sick or dead animal, etc.
