Calpe Town Council has removed twelve date palm trees from Ejércitos Españoles Avenue due to the risk of them falling. The previous company awarded the contract for the maintenance of palm trees had already produced a report indicating that several palm trees had damage to their trunks, narrowing or cavities, as well as pronounced inclinations.

All these circumstances could cause the palm trees to fall as a result of the wind, as already happened with several trees in 2024, or because they were affected by the red palm weevil.

Therefore, taking advantage of the renovation work on the cycle lane, the Environment Department considered it advisable to replace 12 palm trees with mulberry trees to improve the safety of people and property and also to create shaded areas on this avenue.

On the other hand, a few days ago, the municipal gardening brigades carried out pruning work on a group of palm trees located at the intersection of La Niña Street and Ejércitos Españoles Avenue, as the tops of the palm trees were colliding with a high-voltage power line. Iberdrola workers had to cut off the electricity supply so that the gardeners could work safely, and once the work was completed, the line was restored.
