Wednesday, 4 March, 2026 - 10:15

Calpe Town Council is today launching its programme of events to mark 8 March, International Women's Day, with an agenda that includes workshops, exhibitions, talks, participatory activities and specialised training. The programme kicks off with the workshop ‘A journey through women's rights in Spain’, aimed at users of the Civic Centre and run by the Equality Unit.

On Friday 6 March, the exhibition ‘Pioneers of Feminism in Spain’ will open in the exhibition hall of the Ajuntament Vell, a journey through the history and legacy of women who marked a turning point in the fight for equality. The exhibition has been loaned by Aula Violeta de Dones de Acció de Xirivella.

On Monday 9 March, there will be an open mic event called ‘Alcem la veu’ (Raise your voice), a space created for sharing personal stories, reflections and first-hand experiences. Calpe Town Council invites women of all ages to take part in this initiative, which is designed to listen to, accompany and give voice to different experiences. The brief, pre-coordinated presentations will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the Casal de las Asociaciones.

On Thursday, 12 March, at 7 p.m., the Ajuntament Vell will host the talk ‘Abolition of the commodification of women's bodies’, by Vanessa Silva and María Arena. In addition, from 17 to 31 March, the streets of the Old Town will host the urban exhibition ‘Elles–constel·lació poètica’, a selection from Anna Ballester's anthology.

Specialised training is also part of this programme with a specialisation course on criminal law and gender violence, which will be taught from 23 to 27 March by Juan Antonio Jover Pinar and Vicente Magro.

On Friday 27 March, the Women's Association for Equality will organise an open literary discussion on Tara Westover's book ‘Una educación’ (An Education). The meeting will take place at 10:30 am at the Ajuntament Vell.

The programme will culminate with two workshops aimed at students from IES Ifach and IES Les Salines: ‘Mercado de Mujeres’ (Women's Market), a workshop to raise awareness about human trafficking for sexual exploitation, led by María Arenas; and the intergenerational workshop ‘Pasado, presente y futuro de los derechos de las mujeres’ (Past, Present and Future of Women's Rights).

The 8M programme has been organised by Calpe Town Council in collaboration with the Calpe Women's Association for Equality.
